Chapter Six

He couldn’t go to bed without seeing her again.

Calling himself a sap, Gib pulled on his sheepskin-lined jacket, grabbed two wineglasses, and a bottle of wine from the stash he kept in the kitchen—there was better wine in the cellar but what he kept upstairs wasn’t too bad—and headed to the back door. This time, three of his dogs decided they felt like some evening exercise and followed him down the hill to the dark cottage. It was past ten and there was a good chance, given how hard she worked, Fia was already asleep. He’d knock on the kitchen door and if she didn’t answer, he’d head back home.

Maybe.

Gib approached the back porch and saw Fia sitting on the front step, her unzipped sleeping bag wrapped around her. A flashlight and one of Brenda’s notebooks rested in her lap and a thermos sat on the step next to her.

He came to a stop in front of her and looked down, her hair tumbling over her shoulders and halfway down her back. He inhaled the fruity notes of her shampoo, her fresh, flower scented skin. She’d made use of his shower and he was pleased she had. He would’ve been more pleased if he had been in the shower with her at the time.

“Hey.” Gib sat down on the step next to her and lifted up the wine bottle. “It’s a merlot, unfortunately not from your vineyard.”

“If you like red wine, I’m, going to have to send you a box of our Three Vines merlot and pinot,” Fia responded. She patted the spot next to her. “Want to share my sleeping bag?”

He’d far prefer to be sharing her bed—or have her sharing his—but he sat down and held the wine bottle and glasses aloft as she arranged the sleeping bag over both their legs. When she was done, he handed Fia a glass of wine and she shook her head. “I had a headache earlier and took some pain pills. I don’t think I should combine them with wine.” She lifted up her thermos. “I’ll stick to coffee, thanks.”

There was an inflection in her voice he’d never heard before and he wondered whether she was lying. He immediately dismissed the thought, why would she lie about something so inconsequential? Pondering the question, he pulled the cork out of the bottle—he’d opened it at the house—and dumped a healthy amount into his glass. He sipped, sighed, and leaned back on his elbows, looking down toward the blue-black lake.

“Long day?” Fia asked, her shoulder warm against his.

“Not too bad,” Gib responded. “Gabe is giving me shit about his chores but that’s to be expected.”

Fia rested her elbows on her knees and cupped her face in her hands. “I was raised by a single mom and I know how tough it can be. My mom had to run herd on four kids, though, to be fair, the boys were a lot older than me and practically independent.”

“You left school when you were sixteen to go modeling,” Gib said.
